Facial Exfoliation

What exactly is exfoliating?

Exfoliation is simply a technique of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin, which in turn uncovers healthy skin.

There are many methods of exfoliation ranging from mechanical exfoliation to chemical exfoliants.

Mechanical exfoliation involves using a mitten, or a brush to gently scrub off the dead skin cells, whereas chemical exfoliation involves using products such as face scrubs, face peels and anti-aging products that include acidic chemicals.

There is more than one kind of exfoliation treatment for each skin type and by including it in your regular skincare routine you can see noticeable effects even after the first exfoliation.

Some things to look forward to after a good scrubbing are brighter skin, unclogging of clogged pores, a more even skin texture, and just in general smooth and beautiful skin.

Why is facial exfoliation different?

Simply put, the skin on our face is a lot more sensitive and gentle than most of the skin on the rest of our body.

Using some physical exfoliators and even chemicals on the face is a big no no as it can have a negative effect.

If too much pressure is used, you can end up with redness, blistering or even scaring.

And let’s face it (pun intended) we all know that anything that appears on our face that isn’t supposed to be there can have detrimental effects on our confidence.

So one rule of thumb is always test out any exfoliation on your body first before even considering using it on your face.

How often can I exfoliate my face?

The answer to this question varies with each person, as every skin type is different and depending on many factors, such as lifestyle, food, etc. our skin sheds differently as well.

You can do it once every week or even twice a month. The longer you hold off from scrubbing, the larger the rolls of dead skin cells will be.

But it’s not about seeing huge rolls of dead skin, it’s more about having a consistent routine so that you always have smooth and healthy skin.

I would recommend starting with once a week and then depending on the results, see if you need to exfoliate more often or less.

When should I skip or stop exfoliating my face?

It depends on how you feel about your skin. If you’re happy with the way it looks and feels, then you don’t really need to exfoliate.

But if you notice dry skin, flaky skin, or dull looking skin, then it might be time to give your skin a little TLC.

After all, it’s important to keep the youthful skin glow that only a good facial skin exfoliation can provide 🙂

Exfoliating your lips

How can a person exfoliate their lips?

Lip exfoliation is very similar to facial exfoliation. You can use a lip scrub, a lip balm, or even an oil-based product.

Just like with facial exfoliation, you want to make sure that you apply the right amount of pressure when doing so.

If done correctly, you’ll find that your lips will become smoother and softer, giving them a healthier appearance.

What are the benefits of exfoliating my lips?

Exfoliating your lips has several benefits. It helps remove dead skin cells, which makes your lips appear younger and fresher.

It also helps improve circulation, making your lips feel soft and moisturized.

Lastly, it helps prevent chapped lips, which is something that everyone wants to avoid.

How to exfoliate around the eyes?

The skin around our eye area is extremely delicate. Using harsh products on the eye area can cause irritation, swelling, and even scarring.

That being said, it’s still possible to exfoliate around your eyes without causing damage.

First, start by cleansing your entire face. Then, gently massage a small amount of cleanser into your eyelids and under your eyes.

Next, take a cotton pad and dab some gentle exfoliant onto it. Gently rub the pad over your eyelid, taking care not to press too hard.

Then rinse your face thoroughly.

Method of exfoliation for your facial Skin

The type of stroke that you use over your body is different to the stroke you use on your face:

  • on your body, you use slow, long strokes with fair amount of pressure (on some body parts I even put one hand over the other to increase the pressure.
  • On your face you use short, light strokes, but more of them.
  • Try to do your face (and body for that matter) in parts.
  • When you finish one part, then move onto another one, jumping from one place to another will not give you desired effects.
  • The mitten works best when the area gets warm from rubbing it.
  • Increased blood circulation will help the skin to release the toxins and debris, leaving your face super fresh.

A common mistake with many exfoliators is that they mention rubbing in circular motions but this usually just ends up tangling hair all over your body and isn’t as effective as long strokes in one direction first followed by perpendicular strokes.

Using the Baiden Mitten for facial exfoliation

Using the Baiden Mitten for facial exfoliation

Using the Baiden Mitten on your body is quite straight forward, however how can you get the most out of the mitten on your face?

Well, just like exfoliating your skin all over your body, you first need to soak in the bath or under a shower.

However, the question is – “How do you soak your face?” – I mean, you are supposed to soak for about 20-30 minutes. Who can hold their breath THAT long?

The good news is – you don’t have to.

Soaking your face under a shower is really simple, all you have to do is get the warm water to run over your face for a while.

In the bath, you can either splash some water over your face every now and again, or drape a towel dipped in warm water over your face to allow the steam to work on it for 20 minutes or so.

Just make sure that you dip the towel in the hot water every now and again to keep the steam coming.

Cold water will not do much for it.

Once you have soaked enough, and you are ready to start scrubbing, take the towel off, stand up in the bath and start scrubbing your body.

Leave the face for last for a couple of reasons:

When I scrub the body first to rid it off dry skin, by the time I get to my face, I am the master of my stroke.

I can feel exactly how hard to press to get the results without overdoing it.

It is better to make mistakes on your legs than on your sensitive skin on your face.

Scrubbing with Baiden Mitten is quite a workout.

If you start with your lower body and then move up, it is likely that you will be huffing and puffing a bit by the time you get to the top of your body.

Your face will be red and flushed from the effort, and you are also likely to be slightly sweating.

There is nothing better than sweat to loosen all those dead cells on the face and make it easier to exfoliate.

The skin on your face is very different from the rest of your body.

When you exfoliate your body, you will see big rolls of dull skin forming on the surface, but on your face they are tiny and most of them get trapped in the mitten.

They will wash out when you rinse out the mitten and if you rinse your mitten in the bowl, the water will have a “muddy” look.

That is all the dead and oily skin cells from your face.

You might not be able to see those little rolls of dead skin cells, but you might very well be able to feel them under the tips of your fingers if you run your hand over the area you just exfoliated.
